Transmission towers or power towers (or power towers or variations) are tall structures, usually steel lattice towers, used to support overhead power lines.
The tower may be self-supporting and able to resist all forces caused by wire loading, wire imbalance, wind and ice in any direction. Such towers usually have an approximately square base and usually have four points of contact with the ground.
The design of the semi-flexible tower makes it possible to use overhead ground wires to transfer mechanical loads to adjacent structures when the phase conductors are broken and the structure is under unbalanced loads. This type is useful when the phase conductors are bundled together (two or more wires per phase) under extra high voltage. Unless a catastrophic collapse or storm occurs, no one is likely to collapse immediately.
The armor mast has very small dimensions and the tension depends on the cable support structure and any unbalanced tensile loads from the conductor. Tie towers can be made V-shaped, saving weight and cost.
